It is with great sadness that the family of Jean Sandell, age 86 of Petit Cap, announce her passing on January 14, 2026. Jean passed away peacefully at the Georges-L-Dumont Hospital with family by her side.
Born in Little Shemogue, she was the daughter of the late Irvine and May (Harvie) Johnson.
An avid gardener all her life, Jean was well known for her joy of birds, flowers and plants. Her garden was a labour of love; she spent countless hours toiling away and sharing that love with those around her. Jean saw so much beauty in her flowers; they brought her peace and became a quiet refuge, reminding us that we can all find great comfort in the simplest things.
Jean "spoke her mind" freely. Her honesty always came from a place of care and a desire to see others make good choices. She held high expectations, not to judge, but to guide those she loved toward becoming their best selves.
Jean acknowledged that her life was not always easy. However, this never stopped her from wishing the best for others, nor did it prevent her from helping anyone who asked. Her belief in quality over quantity showed us the importance of caring for and cherishing what we have.
In her earlier years, cooking for family was a way she showed her love. She took great pride in making sure everyone was well fed and her shortbread cookies and cherry cheesecakes were legendary family favourites. She was always the last to sit down, a small but telling sign of her love and appreciation for her family.
Above all, Jean loved to laugh, and her youthful spirit would always surface through her laughter. Her strength and her playful nature will live on in all who knew her well.
Jean is survived by her daughter Cheri (Ken) Moore of St-André-LeBlanc, and her sons Randy (Stacey) of Halifax, NS; Larry (Ava) of Magog, PQ; Terry (Rachel) of Moncton; seven grandchildren: Jason, Justine, Lacey, Nicolas, Matthew, Cassie and Maëlli; four great-grandchildren: Mikaila, Madelynn, Nora and William; two brothers: Stewart and Keith (Carole); four sisters: Linda Walton, Janette Johnson, Marsha Holmes and Betty Lacy, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Clement (2005) and her brother Andrew (1962), her sisters-in-law Pauline Johnson and Bernice LeBlanc and her brother-in-law Richard Walton.
The family wishes to express our heartfelt thank you to Francine LeBlanc for taking excellent care of our matriarch in her time of need and to the staff of the Hospital and the Oncology Centre in Moncton.
Arrangements are under the care and supervision of the Jones Funeral Homes, Port Elgin and Sackville, NB. To respect Jean’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family memorial will be held.
For those who wish to do so, donations in Jean's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
