Joyce Nelson, our loved family, friend and community member passed away peacefully on May 11th, 2024 at the age of 78.

Joyce grew up a proud Prince Edward Island farm girl excelling in academics, the arts and agriculture before going on to earn two degrees from Mount Allison University. She held a variety of professional and volunteer roles that had a common underlying theme of helping community members that needed it the most. No role gave her more joy than teaching alongside Margie Burden in a Sackville affiliate to NBCC to ensure no students missed an opportunity to develop their education and skills for better futures. Her students, to this day, share their gratitude for the impact she had on their lives. Many days, however, it was difficult to distinguish who were the teachers and who were the students.

Those that knew Joyce well knew her greatest joy came from her daily laughs with her comedic husband, Don. In her words, "he makes me laugh every day". Together they modeled how to live a perfect life as an inseparable pair. They escaped winters in Mexico and Florida, and summered back on the beaches of PEI spending time with grandkids Ella, Bo and Jack who were the lucky recipients of daily Nanna-hugs.

Joyce quietly had a long list of hidden talents as well. She was an incredibly talented artist, gardener, designer, stock market wizard, political debate champion (unofficial) and very likely tracked the most steps walked at the Waterfowl Park she helped design, create and launch while working for the Town of Sackville. Above all she had a beautiful, happy spirit that was contagious to everyone in her presence.

This past year in particular served challenges that could only be managed by committee. We are eternally grateful for the continuous loving support from her dearest circle of friends, too many to name, but special thanks to Margie and Mike. We also share the same level of gratitude for the care she received at the Sackville Memorial Hospital, in particular the full nursing team, Dr. Wall, Dr. Stewart, Dr. Kanji, Dr. Blaquiere, and Dr. St. Hilaire, along with years of after hours pro-bono support from Dr. Josh Wilson, Dr. Valerie Panet-Raymond and Dr. Paul Giacomini.

Joyce was smaller in stature but showed constant courage, enormous strength and positivity until her final day. She reflected regularly recently on her life and would repeatedly ask "how did I get so lucky"? Don, Paige, Dave, Ella, Luke, Nicole, Bo, Jack, Ina, George, Merrill (late) and Gail all know that it's us who won the life lottery with her.

Arrangements are under the care and supervision of Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge Street, Sackville, NB (506-364-1300).  Joyce's family hopes you will join them at the funeral home on Thursday, May 16, 2024 from 6-8 pm for a casual Evening of Remembrance in her honour.

To carry her spirit of community support forward, donations can be made in her honour to the Audrey Sawdon Scholarship Fund care of the Sackville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; a volunteer organization she proudly supported.

Sharing of condolences and memories may be sent to the family by visiting the online memorial at www.jonesfuneralhome.ca or through the Jones Funeral Home Facebook page.
