MacRae, Peter Howard: Died in hospital on August 21,
2023.
Born in Hamilton, ON in 1936, the son of Dr. C. Fred
and Jessie E. (Horn) MacRae, he was educated in the Ontario elementary
schools of Hagersville, Essex, and Jarvis and the secondary school of
Sackville, N.B. He graduated in 1961 from Mount Allison University and
would later earn a Bachelor of Divinity degree from McGill University
in Montreal, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of New
Brunswick.
A
brief career in journalism was begun in the 1950s with the Times and
Transcript of Moncton, N.B. and would formally end a decade later in
Montreal with the Gazette. In 1964 he would be ordained to the
ministry of the Anglican Church of Canada and appointed assistant
curate of Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton.
Taking leave of parish ministry in 1968, he would
serve as a public servant in the Province of New Brunswick until 1979
when he would leave the then Cabinet Secretariat to direct, through
the next 12 years, the office of alumni affairs at Mount
Allison.
Returning to church ministry in Nova Scotia in 1992,
he would serve as rector of the Parish of Melford and Guysborough and,
later, of the reconfigured parish of Strait-Chedabucto and its
collection of congregations from Port Hawkesbury to Guysborough
County’s Dort’s Cove. Retiring to Pictou, N.S. in
2002, he would serve as priest-in-charge of the parish of Bible Hill,
N.S. from 2005-2009. For a time, he would act as archdeacon of
Northern Nova Scotia. He lived briefly in New Glasgow and Antigonish
before returning to Sackville in 2022.
He is survived by his wife Helen,
Sackville; son, Neil (Karen) of Hinchinbrooke, Que., daughter, Kathryn
of Fredericton, as well as five grandchildren and two great
grandsons.
The family wishes to thank the staff of The Moncton
Hospital, and to express their deep gratitude to the doctors and
nurses of the 5th Floor and Palliative Care Unit. Thanks also to Dr.
Steve Gallant (Antigonish, NS) for his many years of devoted
care.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of
Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, NB
(506-364-1300). Cremation has taken place. There will be no
visitation. A celebration of the holy eucharist and of life
will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Sackville,
Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at 2 PM; Father Craig O’Brien
officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.
Burial will take place in the Sackville
Cemetery.
