MacRae, Peter Howard: Died in hospital on August 21, 2023.

Born in Hamilton, ON in 1936, the son of Dr. C. Fred and Jessie E. (Horn) MacRae, he was educated in the Ontario elementary schools of Hagersville, Essex, and Jarvis and the secondary school of Sackville, N.B. He graduated in 1961 from Mount Allison University and would later earn a Bachelor of Divinity degree from McGill University in Montreal, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of New Brunswick.

A brief career in journalism was begun in the 1950s with the Times and Transcript of Moncton, N.B. and would formally end a decade later in Montreal with the Gazette. In 1964 he would be ordained to the ministry of the Anglican Church of Canada and appointed assistant curate of Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton.

Taking leave of parish ministry in 1968, he would serve as a public servant in the Province of New Brunswick until 1979 when he would leave the then Cabinet Secretariat to direct, through the next 12 years, the office of alumni affairs at Mount Allison.

Returning to church ministry in Nova Scotia in 1992, he would serve as rector of the Parish of Melford and Guysborough and, later, of the reconfigured parish of Strait-Chedabucto and its collection of congregations from Port Hawkesbury to Guysborough County’s Dort’s Cove. Retiring to Pictou, N.S. in 2002, he would serve as priest-in-charge of the parish of Bible Hill, N.S. from 2005-2009. For a time, he would act as archdeacon of Northern Nova Scotia. He lived briefly in New Glasgow and Antigonish before returning to Sackville in 2022.

He is survived by his wife Helen, Sackville; son, Neil (Karen) of Hinchinbrooke, Que., daughter, Kathryn of Fredericton, as well as five grandchildren and two great grandsons.

The family wishes to thank the staff of The Moncton Hospital, and to express their deep gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the 5th Floor and Palliative Care Unit. Thanks also to Dr. Steve Gallant (Antigonish, NS) for his many years of devoted care.
