It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Barbara Jean Townshend, age 95, of Fredericton, NB, formerly of Cambridge, Mass, Montreal, Calgary, Moncton and Saint John.  Barbara passed away in Ottawa, ON at the Chartwell Empress Kanata Retirement Residence on Monday, March 1, 2021.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she was a daughter of the late Basil and Viola (Patterson) Spence.

Barbara (not Barb) loved to go for walks. She knew all the walking trails in Fredericton. She loved nature; knew all the names of birds and flowers and had many books to help with her research. She loved to bake; bread, rolls and sweets were well known when visitors dropped by. She wrote long, newsy letters and sent cards for every occasion. She was very neighbourly and had the wonderful skill of being able to start a conversation in any social setting. Her knowledge of family lore and historical records was well known. In her later years she was so appreciative of any visits from family and friends.

She will be dearly missed by son Gary (Lynda), Toronto; daughter Martha (Chuck) Townshend Colford, Ottawa, ON; granddaughters, Elizabeth, Montreal and Suzanne (Alex) Milsom, Ottawa; great grandchildren Lily and Caden Milsom; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Ronald and sister Dorothy (Stanley) Hewitt.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge Street, Sackville, NB (506-364-1300).  A graveside remembrance service will be held on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 1 PM in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery, Jolicure, NB.  A time of refreshment will follow in the Jones Funeral Home, Sackville, NB.  In keeping with Covid Restrictions, maskes must be worn, Proof of Double Vaccination and a Government ID will be required to enter the funeral home.

Donations in memory of Barbara may be made to your local Alzheimer's Society or a charity of your choice.
