It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Irene Smith, 90, of Sackville, NB. Irene passed away at the Drew Nursing Home on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. Born in Johnson Mills, NB, Irene was a daughter of the late Herman and Tressa Tower. She is the last surviving member of her family.
Irene and her husband, Laurie, raised their family in Wood Point. Irene was a member of the Wood Point Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking and baking ensuring the family was well-fed at Sunday dinners after church. Lots of good home cooking and plenty of desserts for Laurie's sweet tooth. She also liked to knit – her specialty being baby sweaters/hats/booties. There was a special love in her heart for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "City life" at the Drew cottages was quite different. Her and Laurie spent a lot of time walking, dining at Patterson's Restaurant and taking drives to Parrsboro and Masstown with son-in-law, James. Eventually a move inside the Drew was necessary and during this time, with the help of the Drew staff, she continued to take excellent care of Laurie until his passing. Together they enjoyed the various activities but especially liked the music performances and bingo. Irene will be remembered as a kind and generous person by her family and all who knew her.
Irene will be dearly missed by her son, Ronald (Janet) Smith, Riverview, NB; grandchildren, Justin, Shawn, and Craig (Jennifer); great grandson, Sawyer; great granddaughters Katie and Peyton.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Laurie; daughter Donna; granddaughter Aimee; sister, Vivian and brothers Leslie, Melbourne (Helen), Edgar and infant siblings, Muriel, Norman, Floyd and Stella.
We would like to thank the staff at the Drew Nursing Home for their excellent care of our mother. It is greatly appreciated especially during these COVID times when visiting was limited.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, NB (506-364-1300). A public graveside service will be held at the Sackville Cemetery on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 11 am. This service will be recorded and streamed by visiting her obituary on the funeral home website by 2 pm June 8. Please wear a mask and respect all Covid-19 restrictions.
