It is with deep sadness, that we must announce the passing of
Arthur Winston 'Dougie'
Bateman, 71, of Port Elgin. Dougie
passed away at the Sackville Memorial Hospital, on Wednesday, January
28, 2015. Born in Saint John, NB, he was a son of the late
John and Mary (Downing) Bateman.
Dougie worked
as a carpenter in the boat building industry for over 55
years. He also worked as a hired hand for lobster and
scallop fisherman, as well as a power saw operator in the local
area. Dougie enjoyed spearing smelts and eels in the winter,
Mackeral fishing and bar clamming in season. He had a love
for picking wild field berries.
Doug would
challenge his friends in a number of card games, but Cribbage as being
his favourite.
Doug will be sadly missed by his
three sons, Daryn, Fort McMurray, AB, John 'Billy' (Sandra), of
Amherst, NS and Robert (Elena), of South Korea; his ex-wife and mother
of his children, Olga (Trenholm) Bateman, Port Elgin; one brother,
Wayne, of Sackville, NB; three sisters, Janet (Roger) LeBlanc, Baie
Verte, NB, Judy Bateman, Port Elgin, NB, Sandra (Joe) Lucci, Baie
Verte, NB; two granddaughters, Brandi Waye and Montana MacKay as well
as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dougie
also leaves to mourn, the many many friends who visited him during the
nine weeks he had been hospitalized.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Barbara Leger
and a nephew, Tony Duguay.
Arrangements have
been entrusted into the care and guidance of the Jones Funeral
Home. A time of visitation will be held from their Port
Elgin location, 3 West Main Street, Port Elgin (538-2241) on Sunday,
February 8, 2015 from 1-2 pm, with a funeral service to follow at 2
pm. Rev. Carman Webb presiding. Dougie will be
laid to rest in the Fernwood Cemetery in the Spring.
Donations in memory of Dougie may be made to a charity of one's
choice.
