Frances Read Smith of Sackville, NB, died on Wednesday,
October 8th. She was 101 years old.
She was born in Stonehaven, NB, to Herbert and Anne Read, but
spent her youth in Sackville in the family home which later became
Marshlands Inn. She attended Mount Allison University and graduated in
Home Ec. with a BSc in 1935. She worked at the Royal Victoria Hospital
in Montreal as a dietitian until her marriage and Sackville once again
became her home.
Fran had an open-door policy to countless generations of
Mount A students while she raised her four children. She was active in
all areas of Sackville life, and has been recognized for the
outstanding contribution to the town. Along with Citizen of the Year
award, she also received the Governor General’s Caring
Canadian Award, the Paul Harris award and an honorary doctorate from
Mount A. These awards meant little to her, she always said she was
just one person among many who tried to make a
difference.
Her husband, Morris (Mo) Smith died in 1971. She is survived
by her four children, Geoff (Virginia), Wendy (Bob), Doug (Nancy) and
Sheila. She was loved by her eight grandchildren and now seven
great-grandchildren. Her brother Herbert Read died in 1998. His widow,
Alice Read lives in Guelph, ON.
She was a life-long member
of the Sackville United Church, a long time supporter of UNICEF and
active Life Member in the Sackville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary until
her death.
